A laid back, artistic vibe, the West End is synonymous with writers, artists and creators…and some of the best cafes and restaurants in town.

To celebrate this very ‘Galway’ part of town, Galway 2020’s Small Town Big Ideas project, The Curiosity Trail, produced by Galway Arts Centre, will run a series of free events on the weekend of 13 and 14 October.

Organised in association with the Galway Westend Traders’ Association, The Curiosity Trail is a mix of pop-up events with singers, poets, artists and storytellers in cafes, bars and independent stores in the West End.

Singers Ceara Conway and Aileen Lambert will perform in various venues throughout the weekend, as will poets Eva Bourke, Daniel Mulcahy, Saffron Lily and Maria Karapish, and storyteller Paul Timoney.

Talks focusing on the diversity and richness of our city and county will take place on the Saturday of the festival. The Migrant Voice in Irish Art, a talk featuring artists Vukasin Nedeljkovic and Tuqa Al-Sarraj, will take place at 3pm in Róisín Dubh. Dr Charlotte McIvor from the Department of Theatre, Drama and Performance Studies at NUI Galway, will chair what is expected to be a very lively and engaging discussion. This talk will host the Galway launch of Nedeljkovic’s publication Asylum Archive, which also includes an essay by Dr. McIvor.

A panel discussion, entitled ‘Irish language in a Multilingual community’ will take place in Áras na nGael with Mairéad Ni Chroinín, Moonfish Theatre Company, entrepreneur and former librarian with the Polish School Joanna Zalech, poet Maria Karapish and a representative of the Galway Anti-racism Network. They will be joined by Galway Arts Centre MD Páraic Breathnach to discuss Irish in a contemporary, multilingual context in the arts, at home and in the public sphere.

All events are free, with the times and venues listed on Galway Arts Centre’s website and facebook page.
