“The impact I would like to make on Galway in the coming years is to help us realise what is important and what is not and to make art that is for the people, not the chosen few.”

Work

I am a theatremaker currently working on a series of solo performances that push the boundaries of one-man-shows and of theatre itself in Galway City. My brand new show P.I.S.C.E.S. will premiere in Galway in May of this year. It is a science fiction show that takes a serious look at what would happen if we make contact with extraterrestrials. I am also in the early stages of founding a new theatre ensemble for Galway City.

The benefits of art and culture are akin to the benefits to breathing and eating yet, like love itself, it is not easy to define or measure this.

Visions for 2020

I envision the realisation of a city that truly understands, supports and celebrates arts and culture for what they are, as opposed to how they may serve something else such as economic growth. Our art and our culture are expressions of who we are and who we wish to become. I hope that Galway 2020 will create an environment wherein it will be easier to bloom as an artist. I hope that by working together, we will connect not just with our fellow artists, but with the people of Galway and through such connections, we will create something great. I think of our President, poet and Galwegian Michael D. Higgins who said, “The possibility of flourishing in one’s community and culture, and access to the means to do so, is not simply a gift to be meted out by a gracious benefactor; it is both a right and a moral obligation.”

Your Impact on Galway

The benefits of art and culture are akin to the benefits to breathing and eating yet, like love itself, it is not easy to define or measure this. Art and culture is in fact priceless. Yet our society often forgets this and instead places too great of a value on materialism and monetary wealth, on security and economic growth. As an artist and a citizen, I hope to point out this skewed perspective, this misguided attitude by creating art that is both questioning and celebratory. I want to make art that doesn’t just show up the problems of our community but also provides hope that we can surmount all challenges. The impact I would like to make on Galway in the coming years is to help us realise what is important and what is not and to make art that is for the people, not the chosen few.

Project Ideas for Galway 2020

I am very excited about the Artist In Every Place program and will be putting forward a number of proposals for projects for this. One such project is the creation of a piece of art in the public space utilising the many waterways of the city, including the River Corrib.
