‘Tribes on the Tide’ is a celebration of Galway’s maritime heritage, traditions and culture and will showcase the traditional Galway Hookers in their finest glory sailing on Galway Bay and moored in the Claddagh Basin. Bringing to view the boats’ history, design, craft and seamanship together with music, song and storytelling, linking Galway’s past and looking to a new and exciting future.
During April and May 2021, Bádóirí an Chladaigh will engage with primary schools from Galway city and county. Onboard their unique outdoor classroom, children will learn the history and boating tradition of the Claddagh and the Galway Hookers, maritime folklore and essential water safety skills”.
When restrictions allow we will mark the ‘Welcome Home of Maircín Joe’, the second vessel of its’ class built in Galway since 1922 and lovingly restored by Bádóirí an Chladaigh. This 32ft Laithbháid will be launched along the Long Walk where the original vessel was launched and fitted for her sails – a fitting tribute to this majestic vessel. The public will also have the opportunity to meet with the Bádóirí builders & sailors.
