Enjoy a day of celebrations with the local community for the launch of a new permanent McGahern Interpretive Experience
‘Everything interesting begins with one person and one place.’ – John McGahern
Visit the Day Room in the Barracks, immortalised in his work, view items from his writings such as an old fishing rod, an old oar from the tar boat, a sacred heart lamp, framed photos and much more. View selected books alongside large format visuals and audio extracts from each book.
You can also visit the Barracks Room, a room dedicated to the barracks itself and those who served there including Sgt McGahern. There, you will see a map showing the area covered by the Garda on duty, a day book, telephone and other items mentioned in John McGahern’s novels.
The day will be introduced by Mary Mc Aleese, former President of Ireland who will discuss the exhibition and viewers can listen to a few short passages from Mc Gaherns work, whilst being able to see some of the displays and memorabilia that they can expect to see when restrictions are lifted.
Log onto the McGahern Barracks website to view the event.
