Home Truths Exhibition
12 midday to 4pm daily, Mondays to Saturdays
|Date||25.11.2020 - 11.12.2020|
Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture, Domestic Violence Response and Engage Art Studios present the exhibition Home Truths. Originally commenced in March 2020 and cancelled due to COVID-19 the exhibition is now being presented to coincide with the annual 16 Days of Action Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign.
Home Truths looks at women’s experience of and engagement with the Irish courts and legal system in dealing with domestic violence and abuse. Evelyn Glynn has gathered women’s testimonies of their court experiences and artists Blaise Drummond, Alison Lowry, Áine Philips and Ruby Wallis have been commissioned to respond to these testimonies.
Having reported incidents of domestic abuse, many women’s subsequent treatment at the hands of the legal system is disempowering and discouraging. Having entered these arenas with women, Home Truths sheds light on how the legal and court system in Ireland deals with domestic violence through women’s accounts of their experiences. Victims of domestic abuse has few visible champions.
Women’s experiences of domestic violence are often lost in people’s misperceptions of who is to blame and why it occurs. The stark nature of physical, sexual, and psychological crimes perpetrated on women in their homes rarely finds its way into the public. Perpetrators rarely find themselves in court or if they get there, rarely face conviction and sentence. When such cases get to court, the cases are mostly heard in-camera and away from public scrutiny.
The mixed media exhibition features pieces from each of the commissioned artists that provide sombre and sobering insights into the painful and traumatic experiences of domestic violence and abuse that are visited on so many women and children.
The exhibition is hosted in The Cornstore beside the Galway 2020 Hub and is open to visitors from 12pm to 4pm, Mondays to Saturdays. Strict COVID-19 public health protocols will be in place for anyone visiting the exhibition in person. The exhibition can also be viewed and listened to online at Home Truths Exhibition.
