‘Learning from the Landscape’, was a Small Towns Big Ideas project, that revisited the rich Bardic traditions of Medieval Milltown by exploring the bardic past and relating it to the present within the landscape of word, music, fun, creativity, culture, nature and dance.
‘Lifeways of Gaelic Learned Families’ was the first in the series of lectures to be delivered as part of ‘Learning from the Landscape’ and took place during Heritage Week 2018.
With special reference to Kilclooney Bardic School, Dr Liz Fitzpatrick, Professor of Archaeology at NUI Galway explored traditions of bards and bardic schools. Such schools were conducted by professional learned families who served the households of Gaelic and English-Irish lords in law, medicine, history, poetry, music and high-level crafts.
‘Lifeways of Gaelic Learned Families’ took place on Friday 24 August from 7 to 8pm at Milltown Community Centre, Milltown, Co Galway.
