The Woodford Furnace Festival has been hosting iron smelters from around the world in a bid to revive this forgotten art using only sustainable, local resource.
Due to Covid 19, the Woodford Furnace Festival could not be held in Ireland this year. Instead, Irish iron ore has been sent out to smelting teams worldwide for smelting into iron.
Teams are located in Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom and the United States of America with ‘solidarity smelts’ (using their own ore) in New Zealand, Spain and Russia.
On Sunday 23 August 2020, the smelts will be livestreamed on the Furnace Festival’s website from noon till 8pm.
The live smelts will be supplemented with talks on the history of iron in Ireland, the ironworking history of Woodford, Viking iron and other topics.
