Symphonic Waves Reaches Summer Crescendo

13.08.2019

Youth Orchestra to perform series of August Concerts.

Symphonic Waves Youth Orchestra will reach a thrilling crescendo to their summer in August with two exciting concerts. These performances will take place on Wednesday 21 August at Fibín’s new centre in An Tulach, Baile na hAbhann, Co. Galway and on Thursday 22 August at Galway’s Black Box Theatre.

Symphonic Waves, a West of Ireland Youth Orchestra is a collaboration project between Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture and Music Generation Galway County. These concerts will conclude the orchestra’s annual summer residential course. This 5-day residential consists of sectional rehearsals, chamber music and full orchestral rehearsals. Members also enjoy the outdoor activities available at Petersburg Outdoor Education Centre where the residential will take place.

The course gives the orchestra a chance to work together and to contribute their ideas to inform the development of the orchestra by selecting repertoire for performances and chamber music they would like to play. This time becomes a very meaningful orchestral experience for the musicians, when life-long friendships are formed between members brought together by their love of music.

“Since its inception as a specialised string orchestra in 2017, the ensemble has been strategically expanded to include Wind, Brass and Percussion players and subsequently has grown from strength to strength.”

Both concerts promise to be wonderful evenings of music with performances of pieces by Beethoven, Schubert, Hardiman, Dvořák and Tchaikovsky together with Classical and popular chamber pieces. Admission will be free to the family-friendly concert with Fibín and will include traditional music. The evening will conclude with Fibín’s exciting theatre piece, an outdoor spectacle based on a historic uprising in An Cheathrú Rua in 1880.

Tickets for the Black Box Theatre concert are priced at €8 plus booking fee and are available online from the Town Hall Theatre website. Under 18s are free. Further information is available from Symphonic Waves by email or by phoning the administrator on 091 874 557.

Some words from conductor Professor James Cavanagh:
“We in Symphonic Waves are delighted to have delivered our first concert appearance as a new Symphony Orchestra in Ballinasloe in June this year.
Since its inception as a specialised string orchestra in 2017, the ensemble has been strategically expanded to include Wind, Brass and Percussion players and subsequently has grown from strength to strength. This development is evident in the continued delivery of excellence in performance and increasingly mature music making.

The orchestra is exploring a selection of musical genres including some of the great works from the classical music era as well as contemporary and popular music.

The musical journey thus far has been incredibly exciting and challenging. We look forward to many future performances.”
