Announcing 27 new Small Towns Big Ideas projects

02.07.2019

Over €200,000 funding for the 27 projects to be delivered in 2020.

Following an open call for expressions of interest, Galway 2020 is delighted to announce that 27 new projects have been selected for the second round of the hugely successful Small Towns Big Ideas programme.

The successful projects, which will all be delivered by local community groups and artists as part of the cultural programme of events in 2020 all respond to one or more of the programme themes of Language, Landscape and Migration.

The 27 projects will share total funding of over €200,000 to create and deliver their exciting projects which include everything from art, photography, food and music to festivals, exhibitions and much more.  This brings to €500,000 the total investment by Galway 2020 in the Small Towns Big Ideas programme which, by the end of 2020 will have delivered over 70 projects across the city and county.

“This is an exciting moment for Galway 2020 as we gear up towards the start of what will be a truly memorable year for Galway and we look forward to working with these communities to deliver truly innovative and exciting projects across the city and county next year.”

Based on the ancient Irish tradition of ‘Meitheal’ the coming together for a common purpose, working together to ensure that all succeed in achieving a shared goal or interest, the Small Towns Big Ideas programme has impacted communities across Galway through these projects which have brought individuals, families and communities together.  It has supported, and enhanced Galway’s ambitious communities including the production of a number of new festivals as well as supporting and enhancing existing ones.  From Portumna to Inis Oirr and Milltown to Kinvara over 100 community and cultural organisations will have participated in the programme since its inception in July 2018 until the final project is completed in late 2020.

Liz Kelly, Cultural Producer, Galway 2020 said; “We are thrilled to confirm that 27 exciting Small Towns Big Ideas projects will be part of an amazing artistic and cultural programme.  This is an exciting moment for Galway 2020 as we gear up towards the start of what will be a truly memorable year for Galway and we look forward to working with these communities to deliver truly innovative and exciting projects across the city and county next year.  The calibre of projects is very high, and we look forward to working with artists and communities to bring these projects to life.”

The open call for round 2 called for artists and communities to propose ideas that would demonstrate the wealth of collaboration, ambition and creativity that abound in Galway City and County.  It’s all about community involvement and having a European dimension brings European citizens together celebrating our common ground.  The   27 successful projects have ambitiously responded to that call. From biodiversity to cultural diversity and theatre to parades and hip hop, celebrating the most traditional and the very contemporary the Small Towns Big ideas projects for 2020 will form and integral and exciting part of the cultural programme next year.

All applications were subject to review by an expert panel consisting of external experts and internal Galway 2020 cultural producers who awarded the successful projects under set criteria.

All 27 projects will now go into pre-production phase and full details of each will be announced along with the broader Galway 2020 cultural programme in September.
