Become a Galway 2020 Volunteer

16.05.2019

As Ireland celebrates National Volunteering Week this week, Galway 2020 is calling on volunteers to be part of the most exciting year that Galway has ever seen.

The Galway 2020 volunteer programme, Wave Makers, represents a positive and disruptive energy that brings about change. By becoming a volunteer with Galway 2020, you will be a part of the Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture family and play a part in delivering a fantastic year for Galway. You will make new friends and create new connections, while experiencing 2020 from the heart of the action.

Need more reasons to become a Wave Maker? Here are just some:

– Ever wondered if you’d be good at event management, photography, or as a tour guide? This is your chance to find out. Volunteering with 2020 will allow you to discover new abilities, learn something new and improve your communication skills.

– Volunteering with 2020 will allow you to become more involved in your community, and to make a difference to improve the wellbeing of the communities of Galway City and County. By being a Wave Maker, you will have access to different aspects of the programme and will actively participate in creative projects.

– You will have the opportunity to be at the centre of this year-long series of events, and live a once-in-a-lifetime experience, while having fun and sharing unforgettable experiences.

Speaking about the opportunities that volunteering with Galway 2020 brings, Galway 2020 Volunteer Programme Development Manager, Elena Toniato says, “By joining the Galway 2020 Wave Makers programme, you can take up a new exciting challenge, be part of an extraordinary year for Galway City and County, meet new people and be part of the unexpected. With so many roles to choose from, such as stewarding at large scale events, meeting and greeting artists, guests and visitors, ushering and so many more. There are many opportunities to learn new skills, immerse yourself in the arts and have lots of fun. Plus, volunteering is a wonderful way to lift the soul!”

Why I Volunteer

Galway 2020 volunteers tell us why they volunteer.

Eric Costello

“I got to meet some wonderfully positive and creative people. I went to places and events that I wouldn’t otherwise have. I also gained a great sense of satisfaction from being part of the successful bid. But most of all, I had lots of fun.”

 Innocent Ogah

“I really enjoyed volunteering with Galway 2020 – it was very exciting and rewarding. I loved being part of a team, where there was a great sense of camaraderie, and it’s a wonderful feeling to be doing something positive to help my local community and to help develop and improve my adopted city of Galway.”

Niamh Ni Chonaill

“It’s been a real learning experience to get involved in volunteering. You meet new people from all around the world who have their own story to tell and it’s so interesting listening to their experience of Galway and their new life here. Everyone I’ve spoken to seems to love Galway and find that they are welcomed with open arms. So for me, being a Galway native, it’s very heart-warming to hear that.”
