Celebrate wet weather with Hope It Rains Weather Play Society Kits

The Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture programme continues with the launch of Hope It Rains Weather Play Society Kits. Artists Michelle Browne and Rhona Byrne have designed magical Kits which are suitable for all ages and will allow young people to have fun, explore and play in bad weather.

Each Weather Play Society Kit consists of a wide range of fun interactive activities which all centre around the weather. Learn how to make an iceberg, create a weather map of your neighbourhood, discover puddle painting, make a rain catcher, develop your own weather card game and it will even allow you to read the wind!

As part of the Weather Play programme, Ríonach Ní Néill, Artistic Director of Hope It Rains commissioned Michelle Browne and Rhona Byrne to host a series of workshops in 2019 and 2020 with children and families across Galway in Oranmore, Headford, Milltown, Oughterard and Galway City to explore new ways of playing with bad weather, and to create a new artwork in response. The result is the Weather Play Society Play Kit for young people.

Ríonach Ní Neill said, “Weather Play harnesses the wind and rain to make outdoor play fun in all weathers, and since 2016 Hope it Rains | Soineann nó Doineann artists have been working with the experts in play – children – to design weather-interactive games and play installations.

Michelle and Rhona’s kit were developed through a series of bad weather play workshops with children and families all over the city and county, and Galway Libraries’ involvement means it will be available all around Galway.”

“Hope it Rains | Soineann nó Doineann is such a beautifully curated programme of interdisciplinary work by Rionach in an artistic response to weather, it’s innovative, fun and engaging. Weather Play is a really good example of one such project within the overall Hope It Rains Programme. We are really delighted to see this work come to fruition through the combined talents of these amazing artists” Marilyn Gaughan Reddan, Head of Programme, Galway 2020.

Hope it Rains | Soineann nó Doineann and Galway 2020 have gifted 500 Kits to Galway Libraries. They are available in both Irish and English and can be borrowed, using your library card, from libraries across Galway city and county, once restrictions are lifted.  In the meantime, the kits, which promise to entertain young people for hours, can be downloaded now, with user video guides from
