Embrace World Languages at Mother Tongues Festival

21.02.2019

Expect an exciting line-up of fun performances and workshops for kids and adults this weekend as Mother Tongues Festival comes to Galway.

A part of Galway 2020’s Small Towns Big Ideas programme, the Mother Tongues Festival will take to venues around the city to celebrate linguistic diversity.

Throughout the weekend, children and adults will be immersed in a world of languages and cultures along with artists and performers through Irish, Japanese, Polish, French, Romanian, Kant, Italian, Spanish, Thai, Chinese, Portuguese…and many others.

Now in its second year, The Mother Tongues Festival, which held its first festival in Dublin last year, presents fun and educational workshops and performances for both children and adults. This weekend, the festival will take place in a variety of locations around the city including at Galway 2020 headquarters, in An Taibhdhearc, Áras na nGael, the Harbour Hotel, Just Art It and Galway City Library.

“Language is one of the core themes for Galway 2020 and the Mother Tongues festival is a perfect example of authentically promoting the future sustainability of the Irish language among many others. Our vision for Galway 2020 is that it will be a catalyst for a future of inclusivity, participation and sustainability.”

Events include a performance of new and well-loved poetry and songs in Irish for children, an informative workshop for parents or those who care for young children who speak more than one language, a creative bootcamp with artist Andrea Rossi who will discuss how to channel creativity, a drumming workshop and a Mexican dance lesson with feather headdress making.

“Almost 200 different languages are spoken in Ireland,” says Mother Tongues founder Francesca La Morgia. “These new languages that have come to Ireland enrich our society and give us a different view of the world. Our aim is to expose adults and children to as many languages as possible, to immerse themselves in new sounds and enjoy performances from a very wide range of cultures.”

Galway 2020’s Community Engagement Coordinator, Nollaig McGuinness, says the Mother Tongues Festival fits perfectly with the Galway 2020 vision. “Language is one of the core themes for Galway 2020 and the Mother Tongues festival is a perfect example of authentically promoting the future sustainability of the Irish language among many others. Our vision for Galway 2020 is that it will be a catalyst for a future of inclusivity, participation and sustainability.”

About Small Towns Big Ideas

Mother Tongues Festival is just one of 51 projects funded under the Galway 2020 Small Towns Big Ideas programme. The projects from throughout the county and city celebrate ‘Meitheal’, the ancient Irish tradition of coming together for a common purpose. The Small Towns Big Ideas programme offers a rare opportunity for communities to do something that they normally wouldn’t be in a position to do. 2019 will see the second round of funding for Small Towns Big Ideas projects taking place.
