Experience the Magic of Medieval Galway

Galway 2020’s Small Towns Big Ideas ‘Galway Medieval Experience’ will take to the city streets this Saturday 25 May with a day of Medieval festivities.

The series of events, which include a Medieval scribe workshop, a combat display, lots of music and a medieval dance workshop, are taking place in partnership with the Galway Early Music Festival – an annual celebration of medieval, renaissance and baroque music in the liveliest medieval city in Europe.

The events include:

Be a Medieval Scribe Workshop which will take place in Galway City Museum, with archaeologist Anne Carey telling the story of the earliest monasteries in Ireland, showing how the monks lived and the beautifully illustrated manuscripts they produced, with activities including calligraphy.

The Medieval Ireland Combat Display will take place in the Galway City Museum Courtyard, when the Irish School of Historical Combat will put on a display in medieval field warfare. Wearing medieval dress and modern sparring equipment they will give a unique combat display of fighting techniques and battlefield melees using specialist weapon combinations and talks on their uses.

There will also be an opportunity to take part in the Augmented Reality Experience at the Hall of the Red Earl and experience the medieval Hall of the Red Earl in its original state through an innovative Augmented Reality App.

Throughout the day, the streets of the Latin Quarter will be filled with music from shawms, pipes, recorders, harp, lute, and brass. The music starts in the Hall of the Red Earl, Druid Lane and winds its way through the streets of the Latin Quarter.

There will be an Instrument Makers Exhibition in the Galway City Museum where visitors will have the opportunity to talk to the makers and hear what the instruments sound like.

Galway’s Town Crier will be on hand to welcome guests to events, while Court Jester Mollylu will entertain with her medieval tomfooleries. Mollylu will also give a performance of her fire show at 3pm.

There’s loads more happening as part of this exciting Medieval Experience. For details on events, times, bookings and all other info, go to The Galway Civic Trust website.
