Galway 2020: Currently Seeking Men

You read it correctly. There is still time to get involved in the largest, most complex cultural event ever to be undertaken on the island of Ireland.

We hope to see every gender, and every part of the Galway community represented in a blazing, uplifting opening ceremony this February. And with a larger ratio of women to men currently, we are asking the men of Galway to bring some yang to this yin.

Before you’re thrown off by visions of yourself ambivalently waving around a fiery torch, check out the wide range of roles available – everything from percussion and vocals to behind-the-scenes work. This is a rare opportunity to work alongside the best in the industry in an ambitious, large-scale production, all while having a laugh.

Step out of your routine and meet new people; you never know whose path you might cross at a rehearsal. The community cast draws people far and wide with a broad range of backgrounds. Rest assured, you will have the opportunity to work with an expert mentor in your chosen activity. Galway 2020 has rounded up a team of trail blazers to share their skills and insider tips with members of the cast.

Not sure what you can bring to the table? Register your interest online and come along to an information session on 30 November from 1pm to 4pm at Leisureland, Salthill. A commitment of between six and 30 hours of rehearsal time (role dependent) is required. Together, we will find a role that suits your interests and schedule.

Celebrations kick off on 2 February in Clifden, visiting An Spidéal, Tuam, Ballinasloe, Portumna and Athenry, before a breathtaking open-air finale in Galway City on 8 Feb. Over the course of the week, up to 2,020 noisy people will spill onto the streets of Galway City and County, creating a moment that will resonate for years to come.

The week-long event is produced by Wonder Works, an award-winning company with Olympic ceremonies in Athens, London and PyeongChang under their belt, not to mention tour design and production for Beyoncé, Jay Z and The Rolling Stones.

Practice rehearsals will run on either Friday evenings, Saturday or Sunday from 6 to 22 December 2019. Following a Christmas and New Year break, the rehearsal will resume on weekends from Friday 3 January to Sunday 2 February. Registration is open to all over the age of 18.
