Galway 2020 Supports Galway International Arts Festival

Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture would like to congratulate Galway International Arts Festival on the opening of this year’s festival which will bring some of the best artists from Ireland and all around the world to venues all around the city.

As we prepare to become European Capital of Culture in 2020, we echo the sentiments shared by GIAF organisers on the opening of the festival gallery, about the real need for arts infrastructure in Galway.  While Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture does not have a remit to deliver infrastructure we understand the challenge facing artists and the real need they have.

The nature of the locations of many of our cultural events next year is reflective of that.  In delivering our cultural programme next year our streets will become our theatre and the landscape our gallery.  Everything from a ship to the airport will become places of artistic collaboration and cultural spaces of excitement and energy.

We are acutely aware of the long-term, we are working closely with the local authorities to support and inform their cultural strategies.  It is our shared ambition that the impact of an exceptional cultural event such as the European Capital of Culture will be a catalyst for a legacy of arts infrastructure for Galway.
