Join Symphonic Waves Youth Orchestra – by video!

Symphonic Waves Youth Orchestra, a Galway 2020 project managed by Music Generation Galway County, is looking for young musicians to expand the orchestra even further for 2020. And it couldn’t be easier because budding members can now audition by video!

Symphonic Waves began in 2017 with 26 string players. Since then its numbers have almost tripled and the ensemble has expanded to a symphony orchestra with the addition of Brass, Wind and Percussion sections in 2019. There are still some places available and now is the time to join, to be part of the activities of Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture.

Symphonic Waves Youth Orchestra began the year with a widely acclaimed joint concert in Galway with the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, featured on RTÉ News – one of the first times that Ireland’s National Youth Orchestra has collaborated with another Youth Orchestra. This was swiftly followed by a show-stopping performance in February at the 25th Festival of Youth Orchestras in the National Concert Hall, Dublin. On the night Symphonic Waves was also presented with a Youth Orchestra achievement award from the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras for the development of Symphonic Waves and its enrichment programme, Symphonic Schools.

Despite the changes that have been brought by Covid 19, Symphonic Waves will deliver their reimagined programme later in 2020 / 2021.   Places are available for young musicians who wish to join this dynamic emerging Youth Orchestra.  This re-worked programme will include all of the activities which had originally been planned: a residential course a collaboration with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and a performance at Baboró International Arts Festival for Children.  And that is just a flavour of what’s in the musical pipeline!

Auditions are accepted by video and what better way to make use of lockdown time that to give it a go! Don’t miss this unique opportunity made possible by Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture in partnership with Music Generation Galway County and Galway and Roscommon Education & Training Board.

Membership is open to those aged 13 to 23 of grade 6 standard and above and there are places available in all sections, particularly Brass, Woodwind and Percussion:

Brass –                  French horn, trumpet, trombone, and tuba

Woodwind –       Flute, oboe, clarinet and Bassoon

Percussion –        Timpani and general percussion

Strings –               Violin, viola, cello, bass
