Opening Ceremony Rehearsals Underway

Brace yourselves; the Galway 2020 Opening Ceremony Cast is here and ready to bring a wave of fiery energy to the towns and villages of Galway.

Preparations are underway for the opening ceremony which begins in Clifden on 2 February, before travelling to An Spidéal, Tuam, Ballinasloe, Portumna and Athenry on subsequent nights, culminating in a magnificent spectacle in Galway City on 8 February. A cast of drummers and chanters began settling into their roles last week during their first very rehearsal. Sessions for other roles will begin in early January. Designed for maximum fun and maximum learning, rehearsals offer the opportunity to learn something new or brush up on existing skills in a friendly environment.

If you had your heart set on joining the cast, don’t fret; there is still a chance to get involved. Rehearsals take place in Galway City, An Spidéal, Tuam, Ballinasloe, Portumna and Athenry. Everyone over the age of 18 is welcome, and all levels of accessibility are catered for. We’re confident that if you want to take part, there is a role and time commitment to suit you. If drumming is your thing, make sure to join by 16 December. For other roles such as chanter or torch bearer, the cut-off date to register is 19 January, 2020.

“Memories are made when you break out of your routine and take part in something truly unique.”

Why not sign up with a friend, family member or partner? Memories are made when you break out of your routine and take part in something truly unique. A commitment of between 6 and 36 hours of rehearsals, depending on your role in the ceremony, is required. A commitment indeed but perhaps one that could replace a few evenings of Instagram-scrolling. Maybe you were looking for a way to make your leisure time count. Nothing feels better than making things happen in real time with real people.

World-class professionals, Wonder Works, will be gearing you up for the event, which is sure to stay in the minds and hearts of all who bear witness for years to come. Behind-the-scenes roles are also available for those who recoil at the limelight. We are on the hunt for a cast that represents the breadth of this boldly diverse community – that means you!

The next skill-development session will commence on Friday 13 December in Galway City; Saturday 14 December in Clifden, An Spidéal and Tuam; and Sunday 15 December in Ballinasloe, Portumna and Athenry. Check the Galway 2020 website for specific times and locations. Rehearsals continue on either Friday evenings, Saturday or Sunday until 22 December. Following a Christmas and New Year break, these will resume on weekends from Friday 3 January to Sunday 2 February.
