Symphonic Waves will perform a midsummer concert on Sunday 23 June at 3pm in Ballinasloe Town Hall, Co. Galway.
Symphonic Waves is a West of Ireland Youth Orchestra and is a collaboration project between Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture and Music Generation Galway County. Now in its 3rd year the orchestra meets monthly under the direction of conductor Professor James Kavanagh. In preparation for this concert the orchestra has worked intensively with international musicians including Galway Music Residency’s ConTempo Quartet.
“The musical journey so far has been incredibly exciting, and we look forward to performing for everyone”
Prof James Kavanagh, conductor and Artistic Director, Symphonic Waves says: “We in Symphonic Waves are honoured and delighted to give our very first concert as a new Symphony Orchestra in Ballinasloe Town Hall. The orchestra have begun to explore the repertoire of some of the great composers of classical music as well as some lighter repertoire and popular music. The musical journey so far has been incredibly exciting, and we look forward to performing for everyone.”
This is the orchestra’s first performance in Ballinasloe having played in many other parts of Galway County including Kylemore Abbey, Furbo, Loughrea, and Clonbur. It will also be the orchestra’s first public concert as a full symphony orchestra having recently recruited woodwind, brass and percussion sections.”
The orchestra is very much led by the musicians and their voice is the keystone to the evolution of the orchestra. In addition to contributing their ideas to inform the development of the orchestra, the musicians also select repertoire for performances and suggest chamber music which they would like to play. This level of involvement creates a very meaningful orchestral experience for the orchestra and has the happy consequence of life-long friendships being formed between members who may otherwise never have met, brought together by their love of music.
Later in the summer Symphonic Waves will take part in their annual summer residential course in Petersburg Outdoor Education Centre near Clonbur in north County Galway. This 5-day residential consists of sectional rehearsals, chamber music and full orchestral rehearsals culminating in a powerful performance.
23 June promises to be a wonderful afternoon of music with performances of pieces by Beethoven, Schubert, Hardiman and Dvořák.
Tickets for this family friendly event are priced at €9 and are available from the Ballinasloe Town Hall website.
