Why I Volunteer: Innocent Ogah
03.02.2019Galway 2020 Wave Maker Innocent Ogah talks to us about why he volunteers and his hopes for 2020.
Why did you become a Galway 2020 volunteer?
I became a Galway 2020 volunteer in 2016 to represent and improve the lives of asylum seekers, refugees and all those from ethnic minorities and diverse cultures. I want to promote integration, inclusion and awareness of the multitude of cultures living in our society.
What did you gain from being a volunteer?
I really enjoyed volunteering with Galway 2020 – it was very exciting and rewarding. I loved being part of a team, where there was a great sense of camaraderie, and it’s a wonderful feeling to be doing something positive to help my local community and to help develop and improve my adopted city of Galway.
“I want to promote integration, inclusion and awareness of the multitude of cultures living in our society.”
What was it like to be a part of such an exciting project?
I had such a positive experience volunteering with Galway 2020, being part of a vibrant hub of activity, meeting new people and helping to highlight the great vibes of Galway. I was one of the people that was interviewed by the judges, which contributed to Galway winning the bid to be a European Capital of Culture 2020.
What are your hopes for the coming two years as a volunteer with Galway 2020?
I hope that Galway will continue to be a wonderful place with friendly people, a multicultural feel, and an openness to providing a warm welcome to visitors and new people. It’s got such a marvelous culture, with music and laughter, and such an interesting history.
