Why I Volunteer: Josette Borg

12.02.2019

Josette Borg, an events and wedding planner, volunteered with Valletta 2018 for the duration of its European Capital of Culture designation. Josette, who will speak about her volunteering experience at our Wave Maker volunteer recruitment lanch in February, tells us why she volunteers.

A former banker, Josette has been volunteering for various NGOs for over 15 years, which has seen her working on diverse projects in Gibraltar, Lourdes in France and Ethiopia

Why did you decide to become a volunteer?

I started volunteering because I had an urge to get out of myself, to set myself a new challenge and to be in a place where I could contribute with a passion. In arts and culture, my interest blooms.

Tell us about your experience of volunteering with Valletta 2018?

I am very grateful for the Tal-Kultura organisation, which created a safe environment for the volunteers, where each of us could feel part of a family while we were out there making a difference.

What was it like to be a part of such a large celebration?

It was such a unique experience. Every event, from the run-up to Valletta 2018 to the last celebration, was like Christmas every day. Carrying out our duties, knowing we were paying tribute to our heritage while contributing to history-in-the-making, was amazing.

What were the highlights of your volunteering experience?

Every time I left the house wearing the uniform for an event was a highlight. Each time, when you volunteer, you get the opportunity to get outside of yourself, to reach out to audiences, to put a smile on people’s faces while at the same time, helping to make each event a success. Those moments will be ingrained in my mind forever.

“You get the opportunity to get outside of yourself, to reach out to audiences, to put a smile on people’s faces.”

What did you gain personally and professionally from the experience?

For me, the whole volunteering experience was hugely rewarding for me, both professionally and personally. There were so many different exceptional experiences.

What would you say to those who are thinking about volunteering for Galway 2020?

The secret to living a life in full bloom is in giving!
