In 2019, Third Level Textile Students from the Centre for Creative Arts and Media, GMIT were invited to respond to the ARAN
ARAN: ARTIFACT | CULTURE | LAND is their interpretation. The work presented online is process-led and includes drawing, colour studies, digitally printed textiles, weaving and garments.
Textile students from The Centre for Creative Arts and Media, GMIT under the tutelage of lecturers took part on a field study day and a site visit to the Aran Islands in 2019. This was the inspiration for work produced. Students were invited to consider the natural environment and landscape of the Islands, its colour and patterns and to study the designs of the Aran Knit.
Through the mediums of photography, drawings, fabric print and weaving students created work reflecting the complex designs of the Aran Knit, artefacts and the landscape of Galways Islands. The project has expanded and developed students practice and design skills. An award will be made to one Textile Fashion student as part of the project in October 2020.
