John McGahern

Enjoy a day of celebrations with the local community for the launch of a new permanent McGahern Interpretive Experience.

‘Everything interesting begins with one person and one place.’

John McGahern

Visit the Day Room in the Cootehall Barracks, immortalised in John McGahern’s work. View items from his writings such as an old fishing rod, an old oar from the tar boat, a sacred heart lamp, framed photos and much more.  View selected books alongside large format visuals and audio extracts from each book.

Visit the Barracks Room. A room dedicated to the barracks itself and those who served there including Sgt McGahern. See a map showing the area covered by the Garda on duty, a daybook, telephone and other items mentioned in John McGahern’s novels.
