Following the guidance issued by the Government of Ireland on 12 March in relation to new measures to contain Covid-19, Galway Domestic Violence Response, Engage Art Studios and Galway 2020 made the decision to cancel this event.
While Galway Domestic Violence Response, Engage Art Studios and Galway 2020 are extremely disappointed to have made these decisions, public health is our number one priority and we must follow Government advice.
Galway 2020’s Small Towns Big Ideas project Home Truths is now available to experience as a digital exhibition. The project looks at women’s experience of and engagement with the Irish courts and legal system in dealing with domestic violence and abuse.
See www.engageartstudios.com to view the exhibition
Home Truths is an exhibition inspired by women’s testimonies of their court experiences. Having reported incidents of domestic abuse, many women’s subsequent treatment at the hands of the legal system is disempowering and discouraging.
Having entered these arenas with women, artist Evelyn Glynn is now creating a sound installation that will interweave their testimonies with work from artists under invitation to respond.
The work will be shown at Engage Art Studios from Saturday, 8 March to Saturday 14 March, as part of the Wild Atlantic Women weekend. The second part of this project will take place in Samhain to coincide with 16 days of action for human rights, culminating in International Day for Human Rights on 10 December 2020.
