A small clue is a new short film of music, movement and spoken word, featuring a newly composed vocal sextet entitled Leide Beag, commissioned by Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture as part of the Aistriú project in partnership with NUI Galway. Taking its name from a poem by Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, together, the companion pieces of  a small clue // Leide Beag are both inspired by lived, inherited and ancestral stories of migration.

This film weaves new artistic responses to a collective experience of up-rooting and re-rooting. Voices of the newly arrived, settled, and native to this historically migrant land are shared through a series of intimate moments of movement, music and text.

The event will be introduced by Professor Rióna Ní Fhríghíl, and the premiere of a small clue will be accompanied by a post-show discussion with the performers and creators involved in the project, moderated by Marianne Ní Chinnéide.

The screening and post-show discussion will occur in tandem with the digital record release of Ian Wilson’s Leide Beag. This four-movement vocal sextet performed by Tonnta is a stunning meditation on the different facets of migration performed by Tonnta. Available on Bandcamp from October 6 with all proceeds going to MASI.

Welcome.

This hybrid work weaves new artistic responses to a collective experience of up-rooting and  re-rooting. Voices of the newly arrived, settled, and native to this historically migrant land are shared through a series of intimate individual and ensemble moments.

Connection.

Heartfelt gestures of welcome and searing new poetry combine to speak to the here and  now. This interdisciplinary work was developed through a collaborative workshop process  lead by choreographer Siobhán Ní Dhuinnín and writer Chiamaka Enyi-Amadi.

Freedom.

Commissioned by Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture as part of the Aistriú project in partnership with NUI Galway, the poetry of Louis De Paor and Maírtín Ó Diréain is set in a stirring suite of new music by composer Ian Wilson and  performed by the superb vocalists of Tonnta conducted by Sinead Hayes.

Home.

Leide Beag is directed by Robbie Blake, produced by Síobhra Quinlan and created with  filmmaker Laura Sheeran. Made in the lockdowns of 2020-2021, Leide Beag is a statement  of welcome, connection, freedom and home for this present moment.
