MONUMENT is a multidisciplinary exhibition platform. It represents a collaborative process bringing together agencies, institutions and individuals representing the archaeology, architecture, craft and design, cultural landscapes, tangible and intangible heritage, construction, sustainability and the social history associated with the monuments and the islands.
Assisted by the National Museum of Ireland, MONUMENT features previously unseen material from the 1990s archaeological excavations at Dún Aonghasa. MONUMENT will also feature specially commissioned craft pieces by some of Ireland’s most respected makers.
A number of Irish artists have been commissioned to respond to the sites and to the rich cultural landscape of the islands, creating a showcase of excellent contemporary craft and visual art reflecting the sensibilities of this unique place and its people. Textile artist Áine Ní Chonghaile, from the Inis Meáin Knitting Company; glass artist Róisín De Buitléar; silversmith Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill; ceramicist Katherine West; basket-maker Joe Hogan; knitter Elain McBride; graphic artist Maeve Clancy; woodturner Alan Meredith; currach-maker Patrick Flaherty, and film-maker Colm Hogan.
