Commencing in January 2020, Galway 2020 and Poetry Ireland will bring poets working with the Writers in Schools Scheme to post-primary schools across Galway County and City, where, during a poetry residency, they will work alongside young people to inspire and help them create poems on the themes of landscape, language and migration. The Poetry team includes Pete Mullineaux, Ger Mills, Máire Holmes, Ger Hanberry and Jackie MacDonncha, who will be facilitating residencies in St Brigid’s College, Loughrea; Coláiste an Eachréidh, Athenry; Coláiste Chroí Mhuire, Spiddal; Coláiste Einde, Salthill and Moneenageisha Community College, Galway. Joining We are the Poets through the support of its colleagues at GRETB are Colaiste Naomh Eoin, Inis Meain, Colaiste Ghobnait, Inis Oirr and LGBT Youth – shOUT Galway, who are working with Elaine Feeney. The poetry team will take up residence in up to 12 schools, creating a suite of poems which will be broadcast live on air during Poetry Month, April 2020 with a range of special live events on Poetry Day Ireland 2020.
Schools have been invited to participate in a series of short residencies in which students are invited to work with the specially selected poetry team to explore the world of poetry, to write and speak their own poetry and to be in with a chance of having one of their poems selected and to read live on radio during Poetry Month 2020. Each participating school will be encouraged and supported to create a special Poetry Day Ireland event during April 2020, in which resindent poet and We Are The Poets participants from each school will read/ perform their poems.
Schools visits commence in January 2020 completing work in mid March 2020 with broadcasts throughout April 2020.
