Small Towns Big Ideas

Celebrating ‘Meitheal’, the ancient Irish tradition of coming together for a common purpose, the Small Towns Big Ideas programme offers an opportunity for communities to do something that they normally wouldn’t be in a position to do – due to financial or other constraints.

Small Towns Big Ideas was designed by Galway 2020 in response to the absolute need to recognise and celebrate the diversity and richness of Galway, its places, its people and its rich culture in both urban and rural settings.

The huge potential for Small Towns Big Ideas to mobilise local communities and artists was also clearly demonstrated in the three Small Towns Big Ideas Pilot Projects that were developed by local communities in Athenry, Ballygar and Headford during the bid process.

In the first open call for 2018, 51 projects from diverse artforms, across Galway City and County, were funded, some of which were produced in 2018 with others taking place in 2019.
