Galway 2020 and Galway City Museum present Monument, curated by Sybil Curley and Eithne Verling.
Galway City Council Museum’s MONUMENT exhibition investigates some of Europe’s most interesting large stone monuments found on many of our smallest islands and asks who, when, how and why?
Focusing on the stone forts of the Aran Islands, this project presents some of the archaeological and scientific evidence, including excavated material, and explores the nature and traditions of the communities that created and still care for these spectacular sites.
The MONUMENT project at the museum has invited eight artists to respond to the sites and to the rich cultural landscape of the islands. These artists have created a showcase of excellent contemporary craft and visual art that reflects the sensibilities of this unique place and its people. Blending digital, physical and tactile experiences, the exhibition will entertain, inform and spark wonder in audiences of all ages.
